The National Honor Society and the Student Body Officers have undertaken a number of projects to raise money for the people of Haiti. We hope that everyone will get behind our efforts to assist the Haitian people.

The students kicked off the week with a wonderful assembly put on by the National Honor Society & the Student Body officers. Randi Robinson put together a very moving presentation depicting some of the conditions currently facing the Haitian people and Jordan Ames gave an outstanding speech. They then outlined the means by which students could contribute to the relief efforts.

On Wednesday, January 27th the Student Body Officers organized their extended lunch activity, allowing students to make a $2.00 donation in order to receive an extended lunch. Many students took advantage of this opportunity, and it appears to have been quite successful although a final count is not yet available.

Fundraising efforts will continue Wednesday and Friday nights at SVHS’ home activities. The National Honor Society will be present at these events to accept donations. They will also be showing the video that they presented to the student body during the assembly on Monday morning. We appreciate the community’s support in contributing to our effort to assist the Haitian people.

Funds collected will then be donated by the school to reputable charities. It is our intent to give the donations to those charities which will have the greatest direct impact for the people of Haiti.

Star Valley’s confidential text reporting line 880-CARE has been up and running for several months now. It is sponsored by Silverstar PCS, Lincoln County Sheriff’s office, and the Star Valley Prevention Coalition. This line is a great way to anonymously report concerns so that they can be checked out by the appropriate agencies in an effort to keep people safe. It should be noted, however, that this line is anonymous. If you want someone to contact you so you can provide more information, or follow-up with you, you must put your contact information in the text. If you don’t include this information in the text there is no way for them to contact you, as the line is anonymous. Please be aware of this as you make your reports if you are expecting someone to follow-up with you. However, if you just want to make a report and don’t wish to be identified or followed up with you can certainly just text your concerns.

Many people are calling with concerns about the various strains of influenza going around, especially H1N1. Many parents have called concerned about their student’s attendance and how it may effect their grades and enrollment at SVHS. Please be assured that our first concern is for your child. As always we encourage you to keep your students home anytime they are sick with flu or other ailments. We also encourage you to follow the advice of your medical professionals.

For those of you seeking guidance about how long to keep your children home when they are sick please see the following from the Centers for Disease Control. ”CDC recommends that people with influenza-like illness remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100° F [37.8°C]), or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. This is a change from the previous recommendation that ill persons stay home for 7 days after illness onset or until 24 hours after the resolution of symptoms, whichever was longer. The new recommendation applies to camps, schools, businesses, mass gatherings, and other community settings where the majority of people are not at increased risk for influenza complications. This revision for the community setting is based on epidemiologic data about the overall risk of severe illness and death and attempts to balance the risks of severe illness from influenza and the potential benefits of decreasing transmission through the exclusion of ill persons with the goal of minimizing social disruption. This guidance will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.”

If you have further questions please access the CDC website at: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/general_info.htm . Please feel free to contact us at SVHS if we can be of assistance, or to let us know of illness that may continue for several days. If your child is out for an extended period of time (i.e. more than two days) a doctor’s note would be appreciated.

Star Valley High School has completed a Quality Assurance Review (QAR) conducted over the past two days by a visiting AdvancED team. The purpose of the visit was to assess the schools commitment to meeting quality standards, engaging in the continuous improvement process, and reviewing the schools quality assurance systems and processes that maximize school improvement and student performance. The team consisted of four members from various schools and districts around the state.

The team spent time pouring over various artifacts (documents), interviewing stakeholders, observing various classrooms, and compiling their findings. At the end of the second day they gave an oral report of their initial findings and stated their recommendation for accreditation. The AdvancED team will now spend time writing and submitting a more comprehensive, thorough report to AdvancED which will be made available to SVHS and its stakeholders in approximately one month.

We appreciate the students, staff, parents, and stakeholders who participated in this process. We enjoyed displaying the accomplishments of our students, staff and community to the visiting team.

Monday, September 28th was a great day for SVHS students as they had the opportunity to hear Clay Dyer’s message. The students attended grade level assemblies where Clay, a professional bass fisherman, inspired and amazed them. Clay was born in May of 1978, without legs, without a left arm, and with only a partial arm on the right side. In spite of the physical limitations Clay was born with, he has achieved amazing things in his life thus far. Currently, Clay is a professional bass fisherman on the FLW Tour. Clay also serves as a fishing guide for disabled and terminally ill children through the United Special Sportsmen Alliance. He is also the national spokesperson for Cast for Kids and does motivational speaking for schools, church groups, charities and corporations.

Clay’s physical limitations have never stood in the way of his achieving whatever he set his sights on. The students were amazed as he demonstrated tying on a fishing lure, autographing a copy of his book, casting a fishing pole, doing pushups, and throwing and even catching a football! The students were impressed by the adaptations Clay has made to do seemingly impossible things.

On top of his physical demonstrations Clay shared his message of D.R.E.A.M.S. The letters in “dreams” stands for Determination, using the Resources you have instead of focusing on what you lack, giving your best Effort each and every day, maintaining a positive Attitude when dealing with challenges and obstacles, and finding your Motivation. Clay told the students that if they focused on the D.R.E.A.M. they would achieve the “S” which stands for Success.

Clay also did a presentation on Monday night for the community. This appearance was sponsored by Lower Valley Energy & High Country Behavioral Health. He continued to meet with students on Tuesday from the following schools: Star Valley Middle School, Cokeville Middle & High Schools, and Swift Creek High School.

Clay was also gracious enough to answer questions from each group of students and staff. It was a very inspiring message from a man who has lived his message each and every day of his life. To find out more about Clay’s life you can order a copy of his book titled, “The View from Down here is Just Fine: Clay Dyer on Life, No Limbs, and Fishing.”

You can keep in touch with Clay by subscribing to his website at www.claydyerfishing.com. Clay also has a Facebook page where you can keep in touch.
